2021 Can Am Outlander Max XT 850 Review: New Powerful & Proven Rotax Engine

2021 can am Outlander Max XT 850 Can-Am gave us a pleasant and needed surprise by announcing the 2021 lineup this week.

After reading the press release, sitting down on a video conference call, and getting some sleep about the changes to the Can-Am lineup, one thing is clear.

The 2021 “new” for the Can-Am lineup revolves around a new technology: Smart-Shox.

Yes, Can-Am is known around the off-road press as a company that applies “all” to the fancy names for its technology, and Smart-Shox is no exception, but, to be honest, this technology does have Can- I spin on Live shock technology. -A valve that grants every right to name it whatever Can-Am wants to name.

2021 Can Am Outlander Max XT 850 Review

Smart-Shox lives up to its name! Can-Am is always trying to push its models a little further, and we can see that in this technology.

By now you may have concluded that the Smart-Shox technology has to do with self-adjusting shocks, which is nothing new.

Polaris introduced the RIDE DYNAMIX in 2018 on the FOX Live Valve RZR Turbo shock, and, since then, others have followed suit. Most notable is the 2020 Honda Talon X4, and now the Honda Talon Live Valve 2021 model. We drove the Polaris RZR RIDE DYNAMIX at the time of the introduction and then did a video review which you can watch below.

No matter what the shock model, FOX Live Valve can adjust the valve inside the shock based on commands from the computer process input from sensors around the vehicle.

When the valve is quickly adjusted, the suspension can then adjust to the terrain in milliseconds to offer the ride people are looking for, such as comfort or aggressive handling.

Things like wheel speed, shock position, gimbal readings, acceleration, braking, and another reading cover what a shock entails.

The real question is, what has Can-Am done to push this technology further and what makes it better than the competition?

Research has found that most people are uncomfortable making suspension adjustments, and even fewer make changes.

The Smart-Shox makes all the necessary adjustments to one rocker switch that controls the three driving modes. Select Comfort, Sport, and Sport + modes with the flick of the rocker button.

For Comfort mode, think of the big comfortable Cadillac mode. Sport and Sport + modes increase the rigidity for a more connected feel combined with a tighter, firmer feel.

Casey Currie, professional racer and DAKAR winner, said Sport and Sport + feel more like driving a race car, and feel that they change instantly when switching from one mode to another.

No matter which model you choose, you get protection from the bottom and the top. In other words, the system will compensate for all the crazy things that happen in any fashion.

Can-Am always adds a “plus” sign to every technology it installs on its vehicles, and it’s clear Smart-Shox is no exception. The ride on the Smart-Shox has to be the best in the industry if for no other reason than the vehicle can control reflections.

That’s a really big deal. You will get an unbelievably good ride no matter what your skill level and driving experience are.

Since the system can track terrain and make adjustments per wheel up to 200 times per second, it makes the best possible ride while maintaining control.

You can easily select a mode, and take advantage of changing settings without having to get out of the driver’s seat.

The Maverick X3 with Smart-Shox means you can take faster turns than before as the vehicle stays even in corners. Yes,

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC ™ ️) is how the Outlander and its Rotax 1000R engine feel so responsive and controllable. With Standard, Work, and Sport modes, iTC throttle-by-wire assists smooth power delivery off-road.

For easy, direct speed-sensitive steering assistance, with more power at low speeds for less steering force and less at higher speeds for maximum steering feel for the rider. Three more modes to adjust DPS.
