Off-road crane up to 3,000 lbs with confidence with capabilities that only come from 6×6 traction and the longest dump bed of 6 x 4.5 feet. Hydraulic power sloping bed, flatbed convertible, the Defender 6×6 lineup has it all.
The NEW HD7 engine (52 hp / 41 lb-ft of torque) is the new king in the mid cc class! Periods of break-ins, initial maintenance, and frequent valve adjustments are a thing of the past. The powerpack design provides a better driving experience, with less noise & vibration.
2022 Can Am Defender Review
Large cargo capacity in a large utility bed, various trims to meet budget targets, solid HD10 platform, powerful Rotax V-twin engine.
Old-fashioned design, no four-seater trim, low engine power output compared to other vehicles in its class, large turning radius, halogen lighting.
The Defender Pro lineup is for UTV owners who need extra bed cargo capacity to do work around the farm or haul a big kill back through the woods, but don’t need to handle a lot of weight.
They are a favorite for commercial applications as well because of the extended frame for attaching special equipment.
The Can-Am Defender Pro and 2022 Can Am Defender Pro Limited platforms take the HD10 power generator and mount it to a two-seater cab with an extended cargo bed.
This is Can-Am’s answer to needing a long-bed pickup truck that can wriggle between trees and gates without a break. Available in a variety of trim packages at various starting price points, there’s a Defender Pro for just about every job.
2022 Can Am Defender Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The standard 976cc Can-Am Defender Rotax V-twin engine powers every UTV Pro trim. Each trim gets the same engine rating for 82 hp and 69 pound-feet of torque.
The Pro-Torq CVT transmission offers high airflow ventilation and electronic drive belt protection in all gears. Two forward, one reverse, neutral and park gears are standard on every Defender Pro trim level.
Drive modes enable one-wheel grass mode, locked rear two-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive with the Visco-Lok QE self-locking front differential.
While the Defender has enough grunts to get nearly any job done, it’s not geared up for drag racing or dune riding. You’ll want to take a look at the Can-Am Commander or X3 range for those types of vehicles.

2022 Can Am Defender Suspension, Handling
The Defender Pro suspension is unbranded but does a good job of providing adequate damping for a machine of such size. While the gentle trail ride won’t beat you to death, it excels at being a pack mule.
The rigid rear suspension is engineered to provide the correct ride at full load. An empty utility-class rig might tend to jump a bit when the going gets tough, but not so for the Defender.
All Defender Pro trims have the same wheels and tires. Four 14-inch cast-aluminum wheels sit on each corner. Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires wrap around each wheel.
The front axle uses 28 x 9-inch tires while the rear axle is wider with 28 x 11-inch tires to help stabilize large loads.
Each Defender Pro sports 220mm disc brakes at all four corners. Twin-piston calipers wrap around each disc to provide sufficient stopping power when unloading or loading.
Electronic hill descent control and hill holding technology also provide braking assistance via onboard technology.
2022 Can Am Defender Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
Handling characteristics are skewed towards the utilitarian end of the spectrum with conventional bench seats and lap belts. The driver’s position is upright and almost like a box truck.
Everything is geared towards making entry and exit as smooth as possible for workers trying to complete tasks.
The DPS trim is very simple with true flat bench cushioning and a simple interior. The flip-up passenger seat offers extra storage. Stepping up to the XT, Lone Star, or 2022 Can Am Defender Limited trim package adds bench seat support for an even more comfortable feel.
Specific trim jobs adorn the cushioned seat depending on which trim package you buy.
All Defender Pro trims offer a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, but you’ll need to opt for the XT trim or higher to get an adjustable driver’s-side seat.
Trim Limited comes standard with a fully enclosed cab that uses true heat and air conditioning to keep you comfortable throughout all four seasons. Glass windows offer better insulation from temperature and sound, and allow a windshield wiper kit.
Both side windows are operated via swing switches mounted too tightly closed doors.
2022 Can Am Defender Payload / Towing
The rear cargo box capacity is rated at 1,000 pounds for all Defender Pro models sold outside the state of California. Within that state, you’ll only get a rated capacity of 600 pounds.
Towing capacity is a modest 2,500 pounds across all Defender Pro trim levels. Each is equipped with a standard 2-inch hitch receiver.
Payload capacity varies greatly depending on how you choose your Defender Pro. While the Limited allowed for 1,360 pounds, the DPS and XT jumped to 1,700 pounds.
Keep in mind that the rating includes you and your helpers, not just the cargo strapped to the ship.
2022 Can Am Defender Electronic
The DPS and XT trim use a smaller 4.5-inch digital display. Stepping up to Lone Star or Limited means you’ll get a larger 7.6-inch digital display with a keypad.
Both offer the following vehicle information: speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip, and hour meters, fuel, gear position, Eco and work modes, seat belt, and 4×4 indicators, front and rear diff-lock indicators, diagnostics, clock, battery voltage, and engine temperature.
The vehicle magneto is rated for 650W output and is paired with an onboard 12-volt battery.
A set of 12-volt (10-amp) power outlets and two powered USB ports are in the cab to help power mobile devices if you don’t opt for the basic DPS trim. DPS runs without a USB port.
Four halogen reflector headlamps are paired with rear LED taillights for a total output of 140 watts.

2022 Can Am Defender Limited Max
Fully hermetically sealed cab, heating and air conditioning, powerful engine, great ride—as far as utility UTVs go, this one checks all the boxes. There’s no factory audio and no surprise upgrade options for Defender Limited.
For those who live in harsh climates, work must go on. Defender Limited offers pressurized cabs with folding windows and factory HVAC systems. Thanks to the onboard heating and air conditioning, passengers can swim very comfortably.
However, the Limited model comes with an extra perk with a penalty because it has 300 to 400 pounds less cargo capacity than the lower trim level models. However, the enhanced convenience is worth more than the entrance fee.
Available in three-seater or six-seater (Max) configurations, the Defender Limited is the ultimate luxury trim for those who want to feel comfortable when working outdoors.
The limited model comes with a full hard roof with interior dome liners and lights, a hermetically sealed cab with open doors, power windows, a glass windshield that tilts (in three positions), and more.
The Limited builds on amenities that make the Defender more livable in extreme weather, and also offers passengers a reprieve from the outside elements, keeping the interior cleaner when the cabin is closed.
There`s nothing new for ’22 when it comes to Defender Limited and Defender Max Limited.
The trim gets the ultimate HD10 engine, making 82 hp and 69 pound-feet of torque. The other two Defenders were redesigned this year, but the HD10 didn’t.

2022 Can Am Defender Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Defender Limited model uses the ultimate HD10 Rotax Vtwin. It produces 82 horsepower and 69 pound-foot torque from its 976cc displacement.
As a result, it is exposed to fierce competition from North Star’s Polaris Ranger XP1000, which has 82 horsepower with the same size engine. Keep in mind that sporty operation is best done with AC turned off, as the AC system also introduces parasitic resistance and power loss during use.
The Defender Limited uses a belt-driven CVT transmission to transfer power to the ground. An electronically controlled 4WD system is standard equipment and provides a glass mode for illuminating soft surfaces.
Limited models get the basic CanAmViscoLok front differential, as opposed to the X MR model, which gets the high-end SmartLok differential.
The Defender Limited model uses 27-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires and twin-tube gas-powered shock absorbers.
With a travel distance of 10 inches on each end, the Defender is well suited for its intended purpose. The cab adds a layer of insulation and comfort to the Defender’s drivability but slightly reduces drivability.
Each corner has a 220mm disc with a two-piston caliper on the front and a single-piston (triple seat) or two-piston (maximum) caliper on the rear.
2022 Can Am Defender Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The Defender Limited full door opens in a suicidal manner, making getting on and off easily. A window that can be operated with the push of a button is also a nice feature.
Defender’s fun dash mountable toolbox is a great addition and can now be locked into the cab for added security.
Being able to keep the HVAC system up and running while you’re working makes a lot of sense for some, and it’s understandable why. Resting from the heat of a 100 degree (and hotter) day is a great feature.
The Max model continues to be a storage champion, with locking seats for easy access to large floorplans that can be closed with doors at both ends. When it comes to carrying cargo, Defender Max Limited is the king as long as it stays within the payload limit of £ 1,300.
2022 Can Am Defender Payload / Towing
The three-seater Defender Limited model has a bed capacity of 1,000 pounds, a maximum traction capacity of 2,500 pounds, and a payload limit of 1,200 pounds.
The 6-seater Defender Max Limited model has a bed capacity of 1,000 pounds, a maximum traction capacity of 2,500 pounds, and a payload limit of 1,300 pounds. The California model has a bed capacity of £ 600.
2022 Can Am Defender Electronic
Neither model has a luxurious suite of electronics, but it comes with an upgraded 7.6-inch CanAm digital display with a keyboard. It undertakes all standard vehicle instrumentation tasks.
The HVAC system also has an automatic temperature control function.
